A couple of weeks ago, I attended the Nutrition Foundation of the Philippines (NFP)' 57th Anniversary Celebration, Nutrition Month Celebration and Book Launching. The program included two presentations: "2017 Nutrition Month Theme: 'Healthy Diet, Gawing Habit for Life'" by Ms. Jomarie Tongol and "Importance of Fiber to the Filipino Diet" by Dr. Ma. Socorro Ignacio. (Note: NFP has made copies of the presentations available online here for anyone who is interested.)
My primary reason for being at the event, though, was to attend the book launch. If you've been looking for a way to add more fiber to your diet, this cookbook is perfect for you.
The cookbook is roughly the size of a magazine, and its glossy pages give it a magazine feel, as well. I really liked that the cookbook was spiral-bound, since it makes using the book while cooking so much easier. This way, you can just leave the book open to the page you need instead of flipping it open every time you need to refer to it or clipping it open or using other methods that crease the spine and/or pages.
As the book's subtitle indicates, it contains recipes from Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand.
There are 15 recipes for each country, for a total of 45 recipes. There are a wide variety of recipes too, so there's plenty to choose from for breakfast, main dishes, snacks and desserts.
Here's the first recipe in the book so you can have an idea what to expect.
Each recipe page contains the following:
- picture
- how many servings it makes
- preparation time
- cooking time
- ingredients (measurement given in both metric and U.S. measurements)
- background information/history of the food
- instructions
- nutrient content per piece (calories, carbohydrate, protein, and fat)
- tips* (found only in some recipes)
- allergen* (found only in some recipes)
Aside from the recipes, the book also contains articles about whole grains and oats, particularly their benefits.
I haven't had the chance to try any of the recipes out yet, but the instructions all seem to be easy and straightforward, even for a beginner like me.
If you find all these interesting and would like to get your own copy, you can buy a copy from the Nutrition Foundation of the Philippines for P300.
